A seismic base isolation system effectively mitigates superstructural responses by increasing the natural period of structures and providing additional damping to dissipate seismic energy during strong earthquakes. The deformation is primarily concentrated in the isolation layer due to the flexibility of the isolation bearings. Although a large isolation clearance is necessary to accommodate the deformation of the isolation system, practical and architectural constraints may make it insufficient. To address these issues, this study develops an adaptive seismic isolation system incorporating shape memory alloy gap dampers to provide additional damping and self-centering capability during extreme earthquakes.
